ACA

Affordable Care Act

Health care reform law passed in 2010. Making affordable health insurance available to more people via the Health Insurance Marketplace. Enrollment in plans offered through the program can only occur during the open enrollment period without a SEP.

ACCESS.wi.gov

www.access.wisconsin.gov is an online portal run by Wisconsin’s Department of Health Services that lets you apply for and manage your state of Wisconsin BadgerCare Pus/Medicaid benefits and other benefits programs in one place, at any time.

ADRC

Aging and Disability Resource Center

Network of regional based resource centers for older adults, people with disabilities and their caregivers and families/ Services are free and available regardless of income or assets.

AGI

Adjusted Gross Income

An individual's gross income (income before taxes are deducted) minus business related expenses or other allowed deductions. See also MAGI.

APTC

Advanced Premium Tax Credit

A tax credit taken in advance to lower your monthly health insurance payment (or “premium”). When applying coverage in the Health Insurance Marketplace, you estimate your expected income for the year. If you qualify for a premium tax credit based on your estimate, you can use any amount of the credit in advance to lower your premium.

Armed Forces

US military forces, including the Army, Coast Guard, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Space Force.

Assets

Property with value. For the purposes of Medicaid this can include items such as cash, stocks, bonds, life insurance policies with cash value, investments, savings and checking accounts, and real estate in which one does not reside.

Asylee

An alien in the United States or at a port of entry who is unable or unwilling to return to their country of nationality, or to seek the protection of that country because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution. Persecution or the fear of persecution must be based on religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion.

Not to be confused with a refugee.
